The term corrosion
identifies a process, which takes place between a material and its environment. This is a physico-chemical reaction of
the corrosion system,
which leads to a change in the properties of the material.
For the observer, this process is noticeable through the corrosion effects,
which present a visible (partial) result of the reaction process.
Corrosion can trigger corrosion damage through
impairment of the function of the material, the environment or the technological system, which can lead to corrosion failure
through a total loss of the functionality of the system. See also Learning Module 1.
